Dear Dr. Linda,
This past Memorial Day weekend was so sad. The four of us were alone watching television. I’m a 48-year-old mother of two, and I’m embarrassed to admit it, but it’s the first time I ever thought about how many men and women gave their lives fighting for our country. Do you think we as parents or our educational system is the cause of this lack of empathy and self-centeredness?

Most likely neither one is to blame. Most people do not think about what is happening to someone else unless it affects them personally. Do they have empathy for those in need? Do most people look at someone in need and think, “What can I do to help them?” Probably, most people do. Otherwise, during times of crises we wouldn’t see such an outpouring of charity. [Read more…]
